Our Story
Fixing the Foundation – Creating a Future That Works for Everyone
The Unity Party was founded on a simple but urgent truth—New Zealand is failing because its foundation has been left to rot. Decades of short-term political thinking, bandaid solutions, and ineffective policies have created a system that no longer serves the people.
Governments have spent too long treating symptoms instead of fixing the cause. They introduce policy after policy, hoping to patch the cracks, instead of rebuilding a stronger, fairer foundation. Unity is here to do things differently.
Nigel McFall – Unity Founder | A Firsthand Understanding of Struggle
Our founder, Nigel McFall, knows what it means to struggle, adapt, and fight for change, because he’s lived it.
As a teenager, he experienced poverty firsthand, and that struggle continued for most of his life. He knows what it’s like to live week to week, to feel the crushing weight of financial stress, and to watch a system that’s meant to help, instead make things harder.
At the same time, ADHD made life even more challenging. For years, Nigel was told to “just try harder”, but the world wasn’t built for the way his brain worked. Like so many others, he saw how systems fail people who don’t fit into their rigid molds.
Then, three years ago, everything changed. After finally being diagnosed with ADHD, Nigel was able to understand his own mind—his strengths, his challenges, and how to work with them instead of against them. This transformation allowed him to see how his biggest struggles were also his biggest strengths.
His brain is wired to synthesize complex information, break down problems, and connect people to solutions. He sees the bigger picture in ways others don’t, understanding not just what’s wrong, but how to fix it.
This ability allowed Nigel to build a successful business from the ground up, connecting people to services and services to people, making sure the right resources reached the right hands. But the problems he was solving every day in business weren’t just business problems—they were systemic failures of government policies. That’s why he started the Unity Party. Because New Zealand deserves a system that actually works for the people who need it most.
The Unity Approach – Fixing the Foundation, Solving the Issues
Unity isn’t just another political party—it’s a movement to rebuild what’s broken while creating policies that actually work.
✅ Step One: Rebuild the Foundation
We’re repairing the core systems that have been neglected for decades while making immediate policy changes. That means:
- Strengthening business, education, and housing policies to create real opportunities
- Ensuring government works for the people, not against them
- Investing in long-term solutions, not short-term political wins
✅ Step Two: Replace Broken Policies with Practical Solutions
At the same time, we’re fixing the damage caused by past mistakes. That means:
- Ending ineffective, bureaucratic policies that don’t work in the real world
- Introducing laws based on evidence, not political talking points
- Ensuring every policy is built for the people it affects, not just for headlines
Piecing Together a Better Future
What makes Unity different is simple: we don’t stay in a neat little box.
We take ideas from the left, the right, and everything in between because we know the answer isn’t found in one place on the political spectrum—it’s found in the entire thing. If a policy works, we’ll use it. If it doesn’t, we won’t waste time defending it just because it fits a certain ideology.
We also believe that culture is central to a thriving society. A strong nation isn’t just built on policies and economies—it’s built on identity, values, and connection. Culture must be protected, strengthened, and understood, because it’s the foundation of who we are as a people.
Nigel’s story is proof that barriers can be broken—but it shouldn’t be this hard. The system should work for people, not against them. The Unity Party is here to ensure no one is left behind simply because the foundation has been neglected.
This isn’t about left or right. It’s about building a system that actually works—for families, for businesses, and for every New Zealander who just wants a fair shot.
If we want real change, we need to stop fighting over where the answers come from and start putting good ideas into action.
New Zealand can do better. Unity is here to make sure it does.
- Fully funded mental health diagnoses – because no one should suffer just because they can’t afford a diagnosis.
- A national fund for chronic conditions – covering treatments that improve quality of life, even when not funded by Pharmac.
- Better healthcare pathways – training more doctors, nurses, and specialists to fix staff shortages.
- Stronger addiction services – with dedicated drug and alcohol rehab centres in both the North and South Islands.
